The definition
Broken home is a term to define a situation where a family is not harmonious and does not function as it should. This situation can be characterized by divorce between husband and wife or even domestic quarrels. In addition, the condition where a mother or father in a family does not function properly can also be an indication of the broken home phenomenon. A family has some functions in life.
The function of family
Spiritual function
In Islam, we know that mothers are the first madrasas for their children. Madrasa here can be interpreted as a place where children learn religion. Mothers are the first madrasa for their children, meaning that a mother is the first place for their children to learn religious knowledge. Not only that, the family is a place where children get used to worship according to the religion of their family.
Socio-Cultural Function
Family is a place where children will learn to socialize with the community. Generally, children have the same pattern of interaction with their parents or the oldest family member. We can say that the family gives inheritance to the children about how to socialize in the surrounding community.
Functions of Love and Affection
In their growth, children need love from their families. Not only children, love is the primary need of all family members. Affection from each family member will affect how children will behave in society.
Protection Function
Children need a sense of security, comfort, protection, and a place to admit their mistakes. Children need protection from phenomena outside the home, for example from the negative impacts of globalization and from other human crimes out there.
Reproductive Function
The function of reproduction means that the family is a human means to channel sexual desires to other humans (of different sexes) legally in the eyes of the law and legally valid, so that the human being can carry on his life because with the biological function he will have offspring in the form of children.
Function of Socialization and Education
The function of socialization or education in the family is to educate children from the beginning to the growth of children into adults, the family plays an important role in efforts to form a good personality from time to time, before plunging into the real life of society.
Economic Function
The economic function or production unit means that the family becomes a good means to fulfill the needs of the family members in it, where in the process this economic function is able to share the family framework, for example the father as a moneymaker for needs and the mother in charge of taking care of the children.
Environmental Functions
The function of the environment in the family means that all forms of behavior carried out by a family member were initially carried out in the family. Children or family members are a reflection of how he can apply his suitability to the environment.
So that, if a family must fulfill its functions for the physical and spiritual health of the children who grow up in it. If a family does not function as it should, it is certain that inequality will occur. This condition is called a broken home.

Beside that, they also have more difficulties establishing satisfying romantic relationships in their life.
