Video Title: She’s childfree by choice. He’s father to five kids.

Date: 28 October 2022

  1. What is being discussed in the video? Explain your answer.
There are 2 people who involved in this video. A woman and a man. The woman is a childfree person while the man has already had 5 children. This video talks about the reason why the woman on the video decided to not have children in her entire life, because she’s already got sterilized, so it means she can’t bear a baby from her womb. She said that when one family has a lot of children, it is kind of irresponsible, since she takes much attention to climate change. She believes that the number of people on this planet are affecting it. Another reason of being a childfree woman is that she doesn’t like children at all. Since she was a child, she’s already hate the children around her, so she thinks that it is totally okay for her to not raising a child by herself. The last thing is about the environment’s reaction when she voiced herself as a childfree woman, because she’s from Indiana, and the culture is just when a person had graduated from school, they’ll get married and have babies. When she said that she doesn’t want to have children, her family or her friends said that you’re wasting your life if you don’t have any children.
  2. What is the speaker’s main purpose? Explain your answer.
The speaker’s main purpose is to not to persuade the audience who watch the video to not have a children, but she just wants to speak up her decision that she made which is not to have children and wants to be respected by people for the decisions she made, because the one who determines her life in the future is herself, not others.
  3. How trustworthy is this video? Who is the speaker? What is the source? Do you think the source and the speaker are trustworthy?
I picked this video for my reference because i was interested on the topic that she stated. It is about climate change. But after i watch the video, i think the climate change is an unreasonable reason that can underlying the thought of being childfree. Maybe it will become a make sense reason if she told the source of a news or an expert that discuss about the climate change itself, but unfortunately, there’s no sufficient information that i get from the video, so perhaps it is still her own opinion because it contains a bias. Thus, i can say that the speaker isn’t trustworthy enough to deliver this information being discussed.
  4. What the speaker’s attitude or tone towards the subject? Does he/she seem to agree or disagree with it? Explain your answer.
The speaker herself was obviously trying to ensure the audience about her decision of being a childfree woman. She truly agree with it and tried to make a justification related to some reasons that she has already stated on the video. She spoke firmly and have enough courage to speak up her thought.
  5. Does the speaker put forward valid or strong arguments? How does he/she support the key points? Explain your answer.
The speaker doesn’t put forward a strong argument toward the topic being discussed. But there’s only one source that existed in the video, it is when she said “there have been studies that show the best way to reduce the carbon footprint is to not really have children, or have fewer children”. From that statement, because there’s no study that she provided on the video, so as one of the audiences, i think the information is not valid or strong enough to support her reason.
  6. Explain how this article will help contribute to your larger group project.
This video is helping me to gain some information related to the reasons why people nowadays decided to not have children in her childbearing age.

Video Title: Can I avoid having children because of difficult times? Islam FAQ with Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Date: 4 November 2022

  1. What is being discussed in the video? Explain your answer.
The topic being discussed in the video is about the Muslim perspective toward childfree. In the video, the speaker mentioned that one of the reasons of Allah made a marriage is to reproduce, to have children. But, if one doesn’t have children for legitimate reasons, then it would be permissible to choose not to have children or delaying to have children whether temporarily or long term. For the temporarily, we can look at the example if one gets married but both are in the university, so they say look for the next 4 years they are not going to have children because they want to finish their undergraduate, and that is completely permissible. And, for the long term, we can look at the example if they are living in difficult circumstances, let’s say when a couple gets married, both of them are journalist and they are stationed in particularly Islamophobic part of Russia and they say like “right now we can’t raise children over here”, so they can choose not to have children and that is permissible.
  2. What is the speaker’s main purpose? Explain your answer.
The speaker’s main purpose is to explain the law is it permissible or not for a Muslim to choose not to have children.
  3. How trustworthy is this video? Who is the speaker? What is the source? Do you think the source and the speaker are trustworthy?
I can say this video is trustworthy because the YouTube channel which provided this video has many viewers and subscribers, also the speaker is someone who is an expert in this field or we can call him shaykh, and the information that he delivered relies on the Al-Quran.
  4. What the speaker’s attitude or tone towards the subject? Does he/she seem to agree or disagree with it? Explain your answer.
Based on the information that I get, it could be permissible for a couple to choose not to have children if there’s a reasonable reason, but the speaker seems to be against the topic if one is able to have children but out of an unreasonable fear for one’s provision, one chooses not to have children, so the problem there is this falls under lack of trust in Allah SWT. Again, what would be blameworthy is when a couple chooses to not have children because they think “what if I lose my job” or what if this, what if that, because the underlying motive behind it is a lack of trust in Allah SWT, and this is not permissible at all.
  5. Does the speaker put forward valid or strong arguments? How does he/she support the key points? Explain your answer.
I think the speaker put forward valid and strong arguments in his answer because when a couple doesn’t want to have children due to the unreasonable reasons, it means that they don’t believe in Allah SWT, they don’t put their trust to Allah SWT, and we all know that in the Al-Quran said that Allah has commanded us to trust in him. So, i think being childfree by choice without any reasonable reason is totally not permissible.
  6. Explain how this article will help contribute to your larger group project.
This video helps me a lot to make me understand about the explanation toward childfree from the perspective of Islam.

Video Title: Are Christian Couples Required to Have Kids?

Date: 12 November 2022

  1. What is being discussed in the video? Explain your answer.
What being discussed in the video is that all the arguments for not having children are built on a worldview. It is radically different from the bible’s worldview. The speaker said that what a sadness when many modern women shortsightedly choose to forego the blessing of having children while millions would literally give their right arm to have it.
  2. What is the speaker’s main purpose? Explain your answer.
The speaker’s main purpose is to explain the advantages of having children that have been written in the bible.
  3. How trustworthy is this video? Who is the speaker? What is the source? Do you think the source and the speaker are trustworthy?
I think the video that I watch is trustworthy because the speaker is a pastor, his name is Pastor John, and he often answers questions from the congregation related to a certain topic. The source to answer people’s questions has relied on the Bible so that it can be trusted.
  4. What the speaker’s attitude or tone towards the subject? Does he/she seem to agree or disagree with it? Explain your answer.
The speaker seems to disagree with the topic being discussed, which is about child-free because, in the video, he said that one of the problems right now is when people choose to not have children because they take much attention to climate change. The problem is: we simply don’t know whether our child will be a debit or a credit to the human race. A curse or a blessing. A taker or a giver. He may be a freeloader with a big carbon footprint or he may be a genius who invents the very means of saving millions of lives. We can’t just arbitrarily predict that our children will be a loss rather than a gain for the world.
  5. Does the speaker put forward valid or strong arguments? How does he/she support the key points? Explain your answer.
The speaker put forward valid and strong arguments because in the video, he said that the bible is not a Pollyanna tale of happy families. Almost all of them in the bible are broken. But none of it hinders the ongoing reality that raising children is normal, beautiful, fitting, natural, and normative. And, in the Bible also stated that God blessed them (married couple) and God said to them to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
  6. Explain how this article will help contribute to your larger group project.

Video Title: Gravitas Plus: The world’s fertility rate is falling. Here’s why

Date: 25 November 2022

  1. What is being discussed in the video? Explain your answer.
what is discussed in the video is about china’s birth rate plunging to its lowest in four decades, more Americans saying they’re not planning to have a child, and for the first time ever India’s fertility rate being below replacement level. the replacement level of India is 2.1, which means that every woman should have 2.1 children if a country is to replace its dying population, but for the first time ever an average Indian woman is not having more than two children and neither are women in most of the world’s leading countries. the video also told us information of fertility rates in many countries like South Korea, Singapore, Hongkong, Italy, and Canada.
  2. What is the speaker’s main purpose? Explain your answer.
The speaker’s main purpose is just to give information to the audience about the fertility rate of many countries, also the reasons why women nowadays have intentions to not have children, and the speaker also wants to remind the audience about the consequences that may happen if the number of the babies is on the decline over time.
  3. How trustworthy is this video? Who is the speaker? What is the source? Do you think the source and the speaker are trustworthy?
I think the video is trustworthy because the YouTube channel that I watch is having lots of news that discussed issues around the world, and most of the news is not biased, so the journalist and the newscaster are in a neutral position toward the issue. The data which they collected is also trusted because they gain information from many countries’ statistics.
  4. What the speaker’s attitude or tone towards the subject? Does he/she seem to agree or disagree with it? Explain your answer.
Actually, the speaker is in a neutral position, because she is only informed about the issues. But the video contained a quote from pope Francis, who said that the choice to not have children is selfish. life rejuvenates and acquires energy when it multiplies: it is enriched, not impoverished. And after that quote, the speaker informed us of the scary consequences toward the issue of being childfree. So, I think the speaker is disagree with the choice of child-free.
  5. Does the speaker put forward valid or strong arguments? How does he/she support the key points? Explain your answer.
I think the strong argument that she stated is the lesser the number of babies the lesser the number of people joining the workforce the lesser the output the GDP and economic growth. And in many countries, some offer for a family who wants to have children is offered. here’s what countries can do instead: have more family friendly policies, have better state-run schools, make workplaces more flexible for mothers make childcare affordable enhance maternity and paternity leave, and finally acknowledge that having a child or not having a child is a matter of choice.
  6. Explain how this article will help contribute to your larger group project.
This video contains so many information related to the birth rate in some countries which i can use for my project.

Video Title: Over 50 and Childless: The Truth About Choosing Not to Have Children! Regrets, or no Regrets?

Date: 30 November 2022

  1. What is being discussed in the video? Explain your answer.
What is discussed in the video is about 2 women who are over 50 years old and since they were young, they decided not to have children of their own choice. And the video contains several questions regarding their choice not to have children. These questions include: 1. Do they feel regret for not having children during their lifetime? 2. What was the hardest part of life when they were choosing not to have children?
  2. What is the speaker’s main purpose? Explain your answer.
The speaker’s main purpose is to inform the audience about their feeling toward their childfree choice since they were in childbearing age.
  3. How trustworthy is this video? Who is the speaker? What is the source? Do you think the source and the speaker are trustworthy?
I found this video from one of the YouTube channels that the content of it is focused on helping the audience get the most out of the second half of life. The speakers are 2 women who lived next to each other when they were young, and they both decided to be childfree women. I think the video is trustworthy because it is based on their experience of life so that the video can give the audience information about what they went through after not having children in their old age.
  4. What the speaker’s attitude or tone towards the subject? Does he/she seem to agree or disagree with it? Explain your answer.
The speakers seem to agree with the topic– which is about childfree, and as we know that they both are childfree. They said that despite a lot of pressures they had during their childbearing age from their environment which forced them to have children while they are still young, they turn out to be very happy with their choice– as childfree women. One of the speakers said that it’s been nice to just have the two of us (she and her husband) to focus on the career.
  5. Does the speaker put forward valid or strong arguments? How does he/she support the key points? Explain your answer.
One of the speakers told her experience when her friend was laughing because she saw a couple and she said “oh they look so loving”– who refers to the speaker, Susan, and her husband. And she said i will bet that they never had children they just looked so happy. And then the speaker asked that girl, “why do you say that?” and the girl answered that is because she and her husband fought over their kids so much that it was difficult for them. The speaker, Susan, also stated that people as a parent can never depend on someone to take care of you. It’s like riding off on a horse and you wish that your prince charming will come. So, the speaker said she thinks that we as people have to take responsibility for taking care of ourselves and our family and not expecting a child or a husband or anyone else. We have to be responsible for ourselves whether we choose to have children or not.
