Video Title: Self Improvement: Antara Flexing & Kecanduan Motivasi

Date: 11 November 2022

  1. What is being discussed in the video? Explain your answer.
So in the video it discusses the self development or self-improvement industry and whether it is useful for others, and because it tends to be self-improvement that has a negative impact, the speaker gives a way to avoid being negatively impacted.
  2. What is the speaker’s main purpose? Explain your answer.
The main point that I took from the video was about “self development’s industry” and whether the self development industry really helps us to develop ourselves or not. So simply the self development industry is when people, or you, meet a content or product and buy products that can help you develop yourself independently. Well, there are actually many products from the self development industry. Not only books, but also many. There are webinars, coaching, videos, podcasts, it belongs to the industry too. And if we break it down again, the products from the self-improvement industry discuss quite a number of topics: starting from motivation, how to get rid of bad habits, building a mindset, relationships, personal finance, lifestyle and so on. The question now is, does the self-development industry really help us all? Well, the answer is yes and no. Mark Manson, the author of the book “seni bersikap bodo amat”, explained that self development actually reinforces perceptions of inferiority and shame, in fact, it makes people feel inferior and insecure. And often self-development products also give unrealistic expectations to the audience. For example, you must have heard that sentence where everyone can be successful, if I can you can too, which is without a disclaimer, that success is actually measured by others, not hard work. For example, there are variables rich in privileges, skills, which is often the case for people who are self-improved, just like that, you can’t say that. But on the other hand, there are not a few people who finally feel like helping out with self development products. It could be that we also have acquaintances who finally changed for the better after consuming self development products.
  3. How trustworthy is this video? Who is the speaker? What is the source? Do you think the source and the speaker are trustworthy?
I think this video can be trusted because what is discussed in this video is true, and many people justify it, the speakers themselves explain or speak in this video. and I think the source and speaker can be trusted because he has a website that can be accessed if we are curious about his channel and he also puts references from the videos he makes.
  4. What the speaker’s attitude or tone towards the subject? Does he/she seem to agree or disagree with it? Explain your answer.
I think he agrees with what was said or discussed in the video, because he also explained in detail the main points discussed.
  5. Does the speaker put forward valid or strong arguments? How does he/she support the key points? Explain your answer.
From what is conveyed in the video, I think he puts forward a strong argument and the way he explains the key points in the video is sequential, starting from the opening, the problems, and the solutions he provides.
  6. Explain how this article will help contribute to your larger group project.
I think it’s quite helpful because the article also opens up my insights about the product of the self-development industry in general.

So in the video discussing Jim Rohn’s story or explanation of the benefits of personal development where he gives an example that his teacher Mr. Shoaff illustrates personal development with money and they also had time to divide their minds and give examples of economic problems that are like we get paid for bringing value to the marketplace and he has a question is it possible to become twice as valuable to the marketplace and he says yes, and all you have to do is understand it and take advantage of it. He said also that Mr. Shoaff said to him in climbing this ladder economically all you have to do is work harder on yourself than you do on your job and there is quotes from him “we don’t have to change what’s going on out there, that’s the wind that’s blowing, all we have to do is change what’s going on in here.” That’s what the benefits of personal development are like.
  2. What is the speaker’s main purpose? Explain your answer.
So the purpose of the speaker here is to retell Jim Rohn’s explanation or story about the benefits of personal development with his teacher, Mr. Shoaff and he gives many examples of what personal development is like etc.
  3. How trustworthy is this video? Who is the speaker? What is the source? Do you think the source and the speaker are trustworthy?
I think I really trust this video, because in this video the speaker only retells the words or opinions of one of the world-famous American entrepreneurs, writers, and motivators, Jim Rohn, about the benefits of personal development, and also he gives a story about his teacher, Mr. Shoaff, who is an American entrepreneur and motivational speaker as well.
  4. What the speaker’s attitude or tone towards the subject? Does he/she seem to agree or disagree with it? Explain your answer.
i think he agrees with what is conveyed in this video because he only conveys what was said by Jim Rohn and at the end of the video also he says to remember this video because it is only half, and if you want to be serious about listening to it, then you have to listen to everything.
  5. Does the speaker put forward valid or strong arguments? How does he/she support the key points? Explain your answer.
Yes I think he put forward a valid and strong argument because what the speaker conveys is purely from the words of a motivational speaker as well, and the way he supports key points here is by giving a detailed example of the topic of his discussion and plus the opinion of his teacher.
  6. Explain how this article will help contribute to your larger group project.
I think the article I read is quite contributing to this project because in the article I find many examples of the benefits of personal development in contrast to the videos I watch where it only focuses on one person’s opinion.

Video Title: Does Self Improvement Work For Everyone?

Date: 25 November 2022

  1. What is being discussed in the video? Explain your answer.
So from the title alone that does self-improvement work for everyone, and in this video only discusses a thought from someone who is not a teacher, but maybe it is related to what someone out there feels. So he said that a lot of people out there know what they have to do and they know the right decisions but few of them are willing to do it because in that phase it’s very difficult and not easy. and it is also very challenging to control the mind every day when faced with the decision to succumb to temptation or ignore it and do the right thing. People always want to look for outward manifestations of their self-improvement that indicate that they have finally succeeded. Many people ignore self-improvement because it may not work for everyone and from the outside it may look like it is based on outside factors, but this does not mean self-improvement is worthless because “hard work is its own reward”. The point is that if we want to improve ourselves or we want to succeed we have to work hard but on the other hand if we feel unable to improve ourselves then the most important thing is how much we want it, if we are not capable then we don’t have to do anything and if we are going to force ourselves to do very difficult things, or work hard, then we need to know the reason.
  2. What is the speaker’s main purpose? Explain your answer.
The speaker wanted to tell his experience about what he had experienced and also about self-development, which sometimes many people have problems in this regard, where the average person is able to do self-improvement but is hindered by feeling difficult and not easy, but some are able to do it accompanied by a clear reason why he does self-improvement.
  3. How trustworthy is this video? Who is the speaker? What is the source? Do you think the source and the speaker are trustworthy?
I think if I had to believe this video then I would say 50% to 50% because this video is just the experience and opinion of someone who may be some people who have experienced it or are related to this video, and he doesn’t express the opinions of experts in his field either, like that.
  4. What the speaker’s attitude or tone towards the subject? Does he/she seem to agree or disagree with it? Explain your answer.
I think in some ways the speaker disagrees with the subject because sometimes as he says that self-improvement is not necessary and basically they know the right or good decision, but few of them are willing to do it.
  5. Does the speaker put forward valid or strong arguments? How does he/she support the key points? Explain your answer.
I don’t think the Speaker puts forward strong arguments because he only puts forward opinions of what is experienced and he is not an expert in his field.
  6. Explain how this article will help contribute to your larger group project.
I think this article is quite helpful in explaining why some people don’t need self-improvement because basically if a person already feels good or feels right with what he is experiencing now, then he doesn’t need to improve himself anymore.

Video Title: How to Improve Yourself Right NOW (and Why) – Prof. Jordan Peterson

Date: 2 December 2022

  1. What is being discussed in the video? Explain your answer.
In the video explains how to improve ourselves and why. So the video begins with the speaker asking questions about what we can do to improve ourselves. And then asked why we should bother to improve ourselves and he likened this to some people sometimes not caring about what they were doing, so it was likened to someone having a disease and that person definitely wanted the disease not to be with him anymore. Then the speaker likens it to when someone is in the room, looks at what is disturbing and then can he fix it. It can be likened to how we encounter problems in our lives and see if we can fix it to make it even better or in the example to make the room look better. Then the speaker says that start where you can start. Sometimes our lives need improvements that we can fix then fix them. Speakers also often tell people that fix the things we do every day because people tend to take things for granted. And that might be fifty percent of your life. Once we have put our thoughts and emotions together, we can expand what we want to think of as ourselves and begin to refine the things that are part of our broader expansion. But we don’t know how to do it, so back to the example of the room where we would spend half an hour thinking what we should do with this room and of course a lot of things would come up and then form a sincere goal where it would reset how we started something and we had to be sincere about it and had to unite our thoughts and emotions so that we acted consistently. So if we can see what we are aiming for, as a conclusion that be careful with what we are aiming for because what we are aiming for determines the way the world manifests itself to us for example if the world manifests itself in a negative way then one thing we need to ask ourselves is “am I leading to the right thing?”.
  2. What is the speaker’s main purpose? Explain your answer.
The purpose of the speaker is to explain what we can do to improve ourselves and the reasons why we should improve ourselves which is packed with very detailed stories.
  3. How trustworthy is this video? Who is the speaker? What is the source? Do you think the source and the speaker are trustworthy?
I am quite sure of what is conveyed in the video even though the youtube channel is just a fan channel but in the video the speaker is Jordan Bernt Peterson a clinical psychologist and professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, Canada. Its main areas of study are abnormal, social, and personality psychology, with specialized expertise in the field of religious and ideological psychology, as well as the assessment and improvement of personality and performance. And I don’t think there’s any need to doubt him because he’s also an expert in his field.
  4. What the speaker’s attitude or tone towards the subject? Does he/she seem to agree or disagree with it? Explain your answer.
I think he agrees with the subject of what is conveyed, because he is also an expert in the field and explains it in detail.
  5. Does the speaker put forward valid or strong arguments? How does he/she support the key points? Explain your answer.
Of course Speaker put forward strong arguments because he is an expert in the field and I like the way he explains key points and by giving a good and reasonable example in detail, even though the video is 7 minutes long I think it’s quite complete.
  6. Explain how this article will help contribute to your larger group project.
That article is quite helpful for me in terms of knowing more common ways to build self improvement or self development whereas in the video it is more in a truly personal direction. and I think this article is quite helpful.
