The first video is a TED Talk video discussing what goes inside the mind of someone who is procrastinating. The speaker told us about his experience in college where he would procrastinate his papers and even his thesis. He told the audience how people who do not procrastinate have a figure called “Rational Decision Maker” in his head. People who procrastinate also has something called an “Instant Gratification Monkey” that likes to look at something fun and delay doing work. When nearing deadlines, the “Panic Monster” would wake up and motivate the procrastinator to do the work. The speaker introduces to us what is procrastination and how it works. He points out that the procrastination system is not the best way to do a job, but in the end, it is still done. He explained that many people experience procrastination. There are two kinds of procrastination. The ones that have deadlines are short term and easier to do. But the ones that don’t have deadlines should be paid attention to because the “Panic Monster” doesn’t show up and it could be the source of long-term unhappiness and regrets. Sirois, F. M., & Giguère, B. (2018). Giving in when feeling less good: Procrastination, action control, and social temptations. British Journal of Social Psychology, 57(2), 404–427. (https://doi.org/10.1111/bjso.12243) The author investigated how trait procrastination was linked to positive and negative affect in the context of social temptations across two prospective studies. Their findings showed that procrastinators are at risk for disengaging from intended tasks when social temptations are present and the positive task-related effect is low. In Study 1, trait procrastination was linked to low levels of positive affect for intended study-related tasks, and these low levels of good effect were linked to students spending more time delay. In Study 2, procrastinators were less successful in implementing healthy adjustments over a 6-month period due to a lack of enjoyment in achieving desired health behaviour changes. This article will help understand why do people procrastinate and what factors cause people to procrastinate.

Video Title: How to Beat Procrastination

Date: 28 November 2021

  1. What is being discussed in the video? Explain your answer.
The video is titled How to Beat Procrastination. In the video, the speaker talks about three main things. 1. Knowing your enemy There is a thing called resistance, which is the gap between the life that we live and the life where we don’t do the things we want to do. The force that is holding us back from doing something productive and beneficial to us is the thing that’s called resistance, which then results in procrastination. Resistance causes fear to grow in us, we fear and are reluctant of doing something and that fear results in more resistance from doing the thing, which causes a loop. 2. Becoming a professional Being a professional here means that you do something because you like it, you have passion for it, and you take pride in the work that you put inside it. If you are professional you would work with all that you have, you would be persistent with that work, and you are not afraid of criticism or something that held you down from doing that work because you love the work and you want to improve it. On the opposite of that, an amateur would not be as good as professionals in taking criticism or acknowledging that your work is lacking. You would not be more inclined to grow from feedback, with an amateur viewpoint of doing the work. As a professional, you know the fear that comes with the work and you would not give up so easily, you would be persistent in your work. 3. Banishing the ego We must recognize the battle that is inside ourselves that is between the ego and the self. Here, the speaker talks about how the ego is how we are focused on external events of how people perceive us, while the self is how we see ourselves. The differences between the ego and the self, with the ego, it is easier for us to give in to resistance because we focus on what people think about us, while with the self, we focus more on our ambitions, inner motivations, and identity of who we are. This is what we have to take into consideration as we make our goals. Our goals should be input-focused, instead of outcome-focused. Input goals are something that we have control over while outcome goals are beyond our control.
  2. What is the speaker’s main purpose? Explain your answer.
The speaker’s main purpose is to give us information about knowing what procrastination is and how to beat procrastination. The speaker starts by explaining what procrastination is and elaborates on them. Then he lists the things that help to beat procrastination.
  3. How trustworthy is this video? Who is the speaker? What is the source? Do you think the source and the speaker are trustworthy?

4 Ways to Conquer Resistance, Procrastination and Fear in Writing https://medium.com/publishous/4-lessons-learned-about-conquering-resistance-procrastination-and-fear-in-writing-ec9cc2a4c735 The article discusses the book ‘The War of Art’ by Steven Pressfield, the same book mentioned in the video. The author, N. A. Turner talks about the lessons he took from the book that he could apply in his writing work. Resistance is easier to rationalize by people because when we are faced with a great task, we would tell ourselves that we absolutely can do it, but we will do it later. Why do we procrastinate? Because we have fear. Fear of producing something unworthy, fear of being judged by others, etc. However, fear also has a positive side to it. Fear is like an indicator of the things that we have self-doubt about the things that we truly have to do.
