In this article, the authors investigated how being a caretaker affected nine women in the sandwich generation. The dual responsibilities that they need to carry, being a mother and a daughter, made them feel hard and exhausted, and at some point, it changed their relationship with their parents from mother-daughter to caregiver–care recipient, when their mothers’ required more care. Some are also required to be a caretaker for their in-laws, and this demand gets higher each time. The SG women’s
insights lead to the development of five subthemes: (1) Physical care; (2) “Sounding board”: The emotional aspects of caregiving; (3) Never enough time in the day; (4) Am I a caregiver to my children?; and (5) Role transitions and variations in caregiving. From the two videos, most of the speakers are women, which is related to the issue of the research. Most of the speakers shared some similarities with the participants in the research, which mainly felt a burden in being a caretaker, and found themselves in complicated situations between being a mother, wife, and daughter. This situation led to the new conclusion that the sandwich generation does not only affect economically but also played role in sexism and mental health, whereas most of the caretakers are all women and some of them are even required to be a caretaker to their in-laws. But still, being in better socio-economic status (SES) are beneficial to prevent this situation from happening.
