Video Title: Victim Blaming – Survivors of Sexual Violence

Date: 7 April 2020

  1. What is being discussed in the video? Explain your answer.
This video discussed the type of blame and why it occurs. The video mention 3 types of blame; behavioral, characterological, and situations that put more blame on the victim. Victim blaming could occur because of the just-world belief which is where bad things only happen to bad people. Moreover, it happens because people want to ignore issues/problems within a society. Sexism, gender roles, misogyny, and homophobia are other factors that drive people to victim blame.
  2. What is the speaker’s main purpose? Explain your answer.
The purpose of the video is to encourage people to put blame on the right place, the perpetrators of the sexual assault themselves. The speaker mentioned that no matter what the victim looks like, do, or the situation there was in makes they deserve to be abused/raped/assaulted
  3. How trustworthy is this video? Who is the speaker? What is the source? Do you think the source and the speaker are trustworthy?
I think the video is pretty trustworthy because it was uploaded by Survivors West Yorkshire (a survivor-led and focused service) and in collaboration with the University of Bradford. The video mentioned a statistic regarding victim-blaming, however, the source was not mentioned explicitly.
  4. What the speaker’s attitude or tone towards the subject? Does he/she seem to agree or disagree with it? Explain your answer.
They seem to agree that victim-blaming should be stopped because it put less emphasis on the perpetrator. They provide possible reasons why people tend to victim blame a sexual assault victim but do not justify it in any way, because at the end they mentioned that no matter what the victim should be blameless.
  5. Does the speaker put forward valid or strong arguments? How does he/she support the key points? Explain your answer.
Yes, I think the speaker put strong arguments because it seems factual/scientific and uses a study to back it up. For instance, they mentioned a statistic of victim-blaming happening, however, it was not mentioned the source. The part about the charactorical is true, Chanel Miller a sexual assault victim mentioned in her memoir that “a victim be flawless, in order to be worthy of life. The audacity to smoke marijuana provided sufficient reason to die. The defense calling me a party animal meant I, too, deserved to be raped.” It shows that in court it is happening.
  6. Explain how this article will help contribute to your larger group project.
10.1177/0093854811434696 In this article, we learn that victim-blaming is present even among police officers. it is part of a larger issue. it’s systemic. https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/10/16/woman-assaulted-on-septa-train/ In this article, it shows that even in public spaces rape or sexual assault still occurs. So blaming people for where they were when being assaulted does not make sense.

Video Title: Why Do We Blame Victims of Social Violence

Date: 4 July 2021

  1. What is being discussed in the video? Explain your answer.
This video discussed that victim of sexual assault is often questioned/blamed for the assault that happen to them. It shows how long this has been going on, even dating back to medieval Europe where women are at fault for being raped. In India, the justice system seems to favor the perpetrator more and the media is too focused on judging the victim. And instead of creating a safe environment for women, they are thought to adjust to the situation, for example covering their bodies, etc. The video mention studies that stated that there is no environment that could prevent rape meaning the victim should be blameless and they are not the problem.
  2. What is the speaker’s main purpose? Explain your answer.
The purpose of the video is to encourage people to stop victim-blaming because at the end of the day the victim is not the problem, because rape could happen anywhere even in public places, to anyone, no matter what they wear, or if they are sober or drunk.
  3. How trustworthy is this video? Who is the speaker? What is the source? Do you think the source and the speaker are trustworthy?
The speaker on the video is Anahita Sachdev, and they source some books and journal articles to prove their points. Therefore, I think it is quite trustworthy.
  4. What the speaker’s attitude or tone towards the subject? Does he/she seem to agree or disagree with it? Explain your answer.
They seem to agree that we should stop victim-blaming as it makes victims less likely to speak up therefore it could result in more victims.
  5. Does the speaker put forward valid or strong arguments? How does he/she support the key points? Explain your answer.
Yes, I think the speaker put strong arguments because it is backed up with statistics and studies. For example, when they mentioned how victim-blaming has been going on for ages they support it with a historical book that confirmed it.
