Video Title: Women Empowerment speech

Date: 31 October 2021

  1. What is being discussed in the video? Explain your answer.
In this video, Meghan Markle, who is the speaker in this video, expresses her opinion on issues related to women empowerment. She tells the audience that when she was 11 years old, she accidentally or unintentionally became a female advocate. This started when she saw a soap advertisement that had the tagline that says “women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans” which according to Meghan’s opinion that this tagline contains a meaning that demeans women and refers to the meaning that women only belong in the kitchen. She felt that it was not right, so she told her father about this issue. Then, she was asked by her father to write letters to be sent to several influential figures such as Hillary Clinton, and soap manufacturers to express her opinion on this matter. And then the letter received a positive response, the advertisement finally changed the tagline to “people all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans”. In this video, the speaker conveys that women deserve the right to equality. She also said in her statement that “girls with dreams become women with vision”.
  2. What is the speaker’s main purpose? Explain your answer.
In my opinion, the main objective of the speaker is to persuade the audience to fight for the rights of gender equality and empower each other to carry out the vision, especially for women (women empowerment), and also to inform the audience about her experiences and the issue related to gender equality.
  3. How trustworthy is this video? Who is the speaker? What is the source? Do you think the source and the speaker are trustworthy?
I think this video is trustworthy and credible, the speaker is a well-known public figure and the search for videos comes from a fairly trusted youtube channel. The speaker of this video is Meghan Markle, an American member of the British royal family and a former actress. The source of this video is the A-Plus channel (A Plus is a digital media company devoted to spreading the message of positive journalism, a kind of storytelling that focuses on shared humanity). So I think the source of the video and the speaker are trustworthy and credible.
  4. What the speaker’s attitude or tone towards the subject? Does he/she seem to agree or disagree with it? Explain your answer.
The speaker’s attitude or tone towards the subject is that the speaker (Meghan Markle) seems to disagree and oppose the issue of degrading women’s dignity related to women’s empowerment. She looks a little emotional when talking about this subject. The speaker looks very opposed to the people that undermine the equality of women.
  5. Does the speaker put forward valid or strong arguments? How does he/she support the key points? Explain your answer.
I think, the speaker of this video put forward a pretty strong and valid argument, I also know about Meghan Markle’s statement and I know the fact that Meghan’s experience in this speech is valid. and I saw it from this source (https://youtu.be/tfaGleA4qYo). The speaker supported key points by mentioning people to whom she had written letters such as Hillary Clinton, Linda Ellerbee who hosted children’s news programs, Gloria Allred who is a powerhouse attorney, and also to Soap manufacturer which meant that she could strengthen her argument on her speech because she also mentions other famous figures in her speeches.

Title: Conceptualisation and Measurement of Women’s Empowerment Revisited Author: S. Sharaunga,M. Mudhara &A. Bogale DOI: https://doi.org/10.1080/19452829.2018.1546280 Citation: Sharaunga, S., Mudhara, M., & Bogale, A. (2019). Conceptualisation and measurement of women’s empowerment revisited. Journal of Human Development and Capabilities, 20(1), 1-25. This article fits the video because it discusses that empowerment is multidimensional, and women who are empowered in one dimension are not necessarily empowered in another. It is also established that women need resources and a sense of agency to independently achieve their livelihood outcomes.

This video discusses women’s empowerment that was delivered by Priyanka Chopra as a speaker from this video. She explained the importance of equal rights that must be owned by all the women around the world. The speaker explained that women also have the right to get a proper education and the same treatment as men. She also told about her experience of seeing how a girl is not given the right to continue her education because her parents can’t afford it and prefer to only pay for their son to continue their education because they think that girls don’t need education because girls just need to marry. In this video, Priyanka also invites all the entertainers and influencers to give their voices and use their platform to contribute to change and to ensure women empowerment issues.
  2. What is the speaker’s main purpose? Explain your answer.
The main purpose of the speaker is to persuade the audience to give their voices in support of equal rights for women. Speaker especially invites entertainers and influencers to use their platforms and voices to contribute actively in voicing women’s equal rights and women empowerment to people around the world, so that people can realize that women are not a lost generation and women deserve equal rights as men.
  3. How trustworthy is this video? Who is the speaker? What is the source? Do you think the source and the speaker are trustworthy?
I think this video is trustworthy and credible, the speaker on this video is Priyanka Chopra who is one of India’s most popular actresses, models, film producers, and singers who is also a former Miss World. Priyanka Chopra is also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2016. Most importantly, she is an icon for youth across the world, especially for young Indian women. The source of this video is the Variety youtube channel. In my opinion, Priyanka Chopra who is the speaker in this video shows an agreeable attitude towards the issue of women’s empowerment. She showed an attitude towards the unfair treatment received by women. She stated that all women have the right to get justice in having proper education and having a career they want. Priyanka stated that women are not a lost generation and not replaceable. The speaker shows an attitude that is concerned about the thoughts of people who think that women are just people who don’t need to get the same treatment and justice as men.
  5. Does the speaker put forward valid or strong arguments? How does he/she support the key points? Explain your answer.
The speaker delivered a strong argument on the topic of women’s empowerment. Priyanka shared her experience while living in India which witnessed firsthand how girls do not get the same education rights as boys in their families. This is because girls are considered not necessary to get an education that is equal to boys because later girls will only get married. The speaker also conveyed her experience when she worked as an artist and her producer-director said that if the movie that she starred in just received a low salary, then she would be replaced by others because women are replaceable in the entertainment business. The experiences that the speaker delivered can strengthen the argument conveyed in her speech which shows that women are still considered weak people who are not necessary to get the same rights as men.

This article emphasizes the relational aspect of empowerment including the role of men, family, and gendered power structures and the flexibility of these to change. This is especially pertinent to India, which has struggled to meet global targets for indicators of improved gender equality which can relate to the experience of the speakers who saw that there were many problems of gender equality for women in India.

Video Title: The Incomparable Malala Yousafzai

Date: 13 November 2021

  1. What is being discussed in the video? Explain your answer.
This video contains an interview conducted by Ellen to Malala Yousafzai who is an education activist from Pakistan. In this video, they discuss how Malala tried to fight for her education but had to risk her life by being shot in her face and shoulder by a member of the Taliban when she was 15 years old. The Taliban is one of two political entities that both claim to be the legitimate government of Afghanistan. In this video, Malala said that she was fighting for the right to education right from the beginning when the Taliban stopped girls from going to school. Malala tells her struggle to become stronger than before. And now she strongly believes that nothing can stop her in this mission and this campaign of education, to say that girls deserve the right to go to school, that has encouraged her and helped her not to think about what she has been through in her life.
  2. What is the speaker’s main purpose? Explain your answer.
The speaker’s main purpose in this video is to inform the audience about how Malala experienced fighting for education for women even though she had to experience the bad experience of being shot by the Taliban. In this video, Malala also persuades everyone that it’s very important that we deliver our message to the right people (government) because these issues would never get highlighted. So it’s telling the world, just reminding them of their duties. We are not asking to do something extra, but we are reminding them that these are their responsibility. They need to listen to their people’s voices. We want them to take action. We want them to do something, and we must highlight it to them.
  3. How trustworthy is this video? Who is the speaker? What is the source? Do you think the source and the speaker are trustworthy?
I think that this video is trustworthy and credible, the speaker of this video is Malala Yousafzai. Malala is an education activist from Pakistan. She became the youngest person to win a Nobel Peace Prize when she was only 17 years old because she was not afraid to speak out for girls’ education, despite threats and attempted assassination upon her. The source of the video is from The Ellen Show’s youtube channel, this is an American daytime television variety comedy talk show hosted by Ellen DeGeneres. Debuted on September 8, 2003, it is produced by Telepictures and airs in syndication. I think that the source is trustworthy and the speaker is trustworthy and credible to deliver this topic.
  4. What the speaker’s attitude or tone towards the subject? Does he/she seem to agree or disagree with it? Explain your answer.
The speaker’s attitude or tone towards the subject is that she seems to disagree with the ban imposed by the Taliban which prohibits women from going to school and cultural activities such as dancing, even watching television are also not allowed. Malala opposes Taliban threats to limit her right to education. She boldly spoke out about the right that girls need to go to school, and that all the girls are able to be educated and it is really important for young girls to understand that women and children are not treated the same way in other countries.
  5. Does the speaker put forward valid or strong arguments? How does he/she support the key points? Explain your answer.
I think that the argument that the speaker conveys is valid and based on the facts she experienced regarding the issue of women and children’s rights. He is a great speaker on this issue because he experienced this problem firsthand. She supports the key points by presenting strong and logical arguments regarding the right to education for women. In this video, Malala said that her family especially her father has empowered her tremendously. Her father has allowed her to fly high as she can, and this is how we want parents to be, to allow their children to fulfill their dreams, and to achieve who they want to be. She also mentions that what is important here is that we take it for granted here, that girls go to school, and that we are able to be educated, but she thinks that it is really important for young girls here to understand that women and children are not treated the same way in other countries. And she thinks that education helps you to get an identity. It helps you to know about your basic human rights. It helps you to discover about yourself, about your talents, about your skills, and how you can help your community and your society. It’s very important that you deliver your message to the right people. if we always feel shy to deliver our thoughts to others. Then these issues would never get highlighted. So it is important to tell the world, just reminding them of their duties. You’re not asking to do something extra, but you’re reminding them that these are their responsibility. They need to listen to peoples’ voices. We want them to take action. We want them to do something, and it’s important that you highlight it to them.

This relates to her potential as an individual whereas her vulnerability as a young girl is presented with reference to her Muslim heritage and culture.

  1. What is being discussed in the video? Explain your answer.
This video discussed women’s empowerment but in a slightly different context from the previous videos I’ve watched. This video discussed why so few women negotiate their first job when compared to men and what can women do about it?. Jane Sojka as the speaker of this video has found that resilience and overcoming fear of failure are teachable skills and she discusses how her college students have learned to become confident. If the previous video talks about the speaker’s experience on the issue of women empowerment, in this video the speaker gives more of her speech about why men are always superior, especially in job issues, and what strategies must be carried out by women to be comparable to men.
  2. What is the speaker’s main purpose? Explain your answer.
The speaker’s main purpose is to inform the audience about the issue of women’s empowerment which leads to the differences between women and men in negotiating the job which shows that men are far more likely to get jobs than women. The speaker also provides strategies that women can do so that there is a balance between women and men in the aspect of getting a job.

The speaker’s attitude or tone towards the subject is that she seems to disagree with women who are less resilient to men and women who are unable to compete with men in getting jobs. She revealed that men and women have equal opportunities to compete for jobs. However, women, in general, tend to have a greater fear of failure than men, if women fail, they tend to give up easily and don’t want to try again. however, unlike men, they tend to fail and keep trying again if they fail. This is what makes the research supporting women tend to be less resilient than men. Resiliency itself is the ability to bounce back quickly after a failure. From these problems, what women need is developed strategies as a way for them to rethink how they view failure because empowering women benefits everyone
  5. Does the speaker put forward valid or strong arguments? How does he/she support the key points? Explain your answer.
