2. Teach new “nature” vocabulary

Now that we have two categories defined (sky and land), the teacher will come up with some new words for those categories. Prepare two envelopes (one green for the land and one blue for the sky) and flash cards for the sun, moon, stars, mountains, sea, rivers, clouds, rainbows, lakes, fields, forests. Pin both envelopes to the wall, open, with the green one low against the wall (to represent the land) and the blue one higher (to represent the sky).

Next, show the first flashcard (eg sun). Ask what it is (get it if needed) and chorus. Also, get the color. Then ask if it belongs in the sky or on the ground. Finally, give the card to a student to put in the appropriate envelope. For example:

Teacher: What is this? Student: ???

Teacher: It is the sun. Repeat, sun. Student: sun. (chorus 2 more times) Teacher: What color is the sun?

Student: Yellow!

Teacher: Great job! Yes, yellow. And does the sun belong in the sky (pointing to the blue envelope) or on land (pointing to the green envelope)?

Student: Sky!

Teacher: Yes, great! Emi, please put the sun in the sky envelope (students take flashcards and put them in a blue envelope).
